The design process has many variations. These are the phases of my preferred design process for residential projects:
Predesign
Concept Design
Construction Drawings*
Construction Administration (minimal**)
* I am competent in construction drawings and have even completed sets for large public projects with extensive documentation requirements. However, in my experience, extensive drawings and specifications may be superfluous if a competent contractor is on board. Therefore, one of my objectives is to provide the right amount of information for each project in a manner that is clear and easy to understand.
** If you hire a competent and trustworthy contractor, it can significantly decrease your need for construction administration services (and their associated cost).
